I love this place.  It's one of the better "traditional" American style Chinese restaurants in the area.  What do I mean by "traditional?"  Well, this is what all Chinese restaurants used to be like, before the proliferation of you're PF Changs, Panda Expresses and other cultureless, corporately controlled places started to creep up.

I've gone to this place several times a month for many years.  I've never once had a bad experience.  My favourite has to be the Szechuan Chicken, but every dish I've had has been excellent.  The Egg rolls are excellent.  The Fried Rice is excellent.  The won ton soup is excellent.

This place is mostly a take out establishment.  I think I've eaten there once or twice.  Their dining area is not much to look at, but it's always clean and there are several tables.  On the weekends, they are open up to 11PM...which is good if you've downed one too many at the Bathtub Gin, and need some something to sober you up (I'd recommend a DD, though, it's a pretty long stumble from the Bathtub to here)

I'd say this place is probably a good place to take dates, both for the delicious food, as well as for a litmus test.  If you're date likes this place, then she's on the level and probably worth keeping around.  BUT, if your date complains about the decor or the location while ignoring the delicious food, then kick that girl to the curb...she ain't nothing but trouble.

So I rarely take to time to actually leave a review but this time I just had to! We've been ordering from here for a long time and it's never been amazing but it's always been decent and they deliver so that's huge plus! But tonight was AWFUL!!! Aside from getting some of our order wrong, the fried rice was almost a grey color, the spicy Lo mein had a freezer burned plastic taste, and the General tso's chicken was so over fried I could barely stick my fork in it! Everything was over cooked and under seasoned. Really disappointed!

We're all too familiar with those tiny Chinese take-out spots squished between a Hobby Lobby and some random business providing tax services. They're the generically named ones (say, "China Food" or "Great Wall") who aren't as lucky as their competitors positioned at a high-end shopping center or amongst fellow restaurants on a dedicated food row. We're also too familiar with the angst associated with such spots -- "Wonder if their meat's well cooked..." "Bet it's way too greasy..." "Hope this place ain't rank!" "What the f#*k's their health score?!"

With that said, I can list a hefty handful of such restaurants who simply Knock It Out Of The Park with amazingly cooked food. All the same, I can list places who've no clue the mediocrity of their food that they make their counterpoint joints in mall food courts appear as Beacons of American-Chinese Food Hope.

In my honest opinion, either Great China's biggest fans aren't well exposed to far better Chinese take-out or have settled for this place as "Best in the Area". No matter, it's sad because the food offered here blatantly sucks. The soups have absolutely no taste. (GC tries to disguise/remedy this by including tons of ingredients, but nothing's executed correctly.) Both their white rice and pork fried rice taste as if they were laundry that'd spoiled sitting in the washer... if that makes any sense. And entrées are all lacking anything that substantiates them into quality dishes. (My "triple delight" of beef, chicken & shrimp w/ broccoli, bamboo shoot, carrot, onion & water chesnut in dark brown sauce was -- without exaggeration -- the worst rendition of this common plate I've ever come across.)

The only great thing about Great China is the friendly American frontwoman who's great at softening the blow of the tasteless food you'll soon be consuming unless you Get The Hint and walk out before it's too late.

Always fresh and very tasteful. When I'm in town I make sure I take Great China with me back to Charlotte!
